For best results:

  • ALL programs are available by RESERVATION ONLY (see applications below)
  • Dates are listed for guided tours, self-guided tours as well as Station Tours and Student Learning History Days.
  • Read ALL the information / instructions on your application before mailing reservation.
  • August 15th registration for 2018 dates opens. Please make sure your mailed in application is postmarked no sooner than the August 15th.
  • September 1st registration for 2019 dates opens. Please make sure your application is postmarked no sooner than the September 1st.

There will be no additional dates added. Please take care in sending in your application on time and correctly.

Applications that are sent in incorrectly may be sent back and not receive their preferred date.

Self-Guided Tours

Guided Tours

  • 60 student max 
  • The ratio is 1 adult per 7 students. This means that if you have a class of 60 we will allow no less than 9 adults. 
  • The group will be broken into tours of 20 students.
  • No grades younger than 3rd grade

Station Tours (2 hours)

Station Tours are designed for school groups ranging from 70 to 120 students.  The students will be divided into 6 groups where they will rotate through 6 different stations throughout the mission grounds.  The stations are 20 minutes long and include demonstrations, touring, and hands-on activities. 

We have more dates available! We encourage you to explore this living history day option if you haven’t before.

  • 2 hours beginning 10:00 a.m. - ending 12:00 p.m.
  • 70 students minimum and 120 student max

Student Learning History Days (SLHD 4 hours)

Each SLHD program serves approximately 700 4th grade students. Self-guided groups visit the mission to observe and interact with costumed docents and staff. Students may discover: corn grinding, tortilla cooking, weaving, candle making, blacksmithing, soldiers, padres, Chumash Indian games, etc.  This program is filled with hands-on activities which bring the Mission to life in a way your students will not soon forget.

To ensure a quality experience for all Student Learning History Day space is limited. Schools without a confirmed reservation who arrive at the mission on these days will be turned away. We appreciate your cooperation to help us provide a worthy program for our visitors.

Outreach Program

We bring the Mission to your classroom! (within about 40 miles) Subjects include:

  • Kindergarten & First Grade -- Pelts of the local wildlife; Face Painting - Indian Designs; Brief Chumash History; Indian Legends; Chumash whistles.

  • 3rd Grade -- Chumash History; hunting, fishing, beliefs; knowledge of their world; Indian Legends; Pelts of the local wildlife.

  • 4th Grade -- Chumash Culture; Mission Influence; Chumash Cultural Change; Pelts of the local wildlife (optional); Weaving - from Fleece to Loom
